The Cutaway is a site created and curated by photographer Ellen Rogers and Artist Prizme. Photographers are invited to become contributors to the ever-growing collection.
'A Cutaway' is a term that originally derived from the film industry where it is used to describe a shot (or series of shots) that break from the main action to draw attention to something else happening in the scene. This technique may be used to illustrate an action that is important to the story in some way but is more commonly used to compress time and/or to establish the mood and setting of the scene.
This meaning can also be applied to photography where a small number of shots (usually only one) are dedicated to illustrating scenery or action surrounding the subject.
‘The Cutaway’ is a website that seeks to catalogue these shots that might not otherwise find a home anywhere else on the net or in print.
